ALPINE EAGLE ex Without Words
Sire: Alpine Eagle
Dam: Without Words
Age: 1 YO
Colour: Bay
Sex: Colt
Foaled: 29/10/2018
Introducing one of the most impressive individuals purchased by Team Grand in recent years, a rockstar of a colt from the first crop of the highly talented galloper ALPINE EAGLE and from a ½ sister to high-class galloper and eventual sire CHURCHILL DOWNS.
“He is without doubt, one of the best horses I have ever trained” – Tony McEvoy
No question that Alpine Eagle was an excitement machine on the track. In just 12 race-starts, the son of HIGH CHAPARRAL showed an incredible amount of raw ability and a devastating turn of foot, winning twice as a 2yo, before a Group 2 win in the Autumn Stakes as a 3yo followed by a second placing in the Group 1 Australian Guineas, where he was narrowly defeated by WANDJINA and would himself lead home Group 1 winners STRATUM STAR and KERMADEC. He would come back again as a 4yo to be narrowly defeated in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes finishing only 0.8 lengths behind FAWKNER, before retiring prematurely at the end of that season after only 12 starts. Now standing at Armidale Stud, this colt is from the first crop of the exciting young stallion.
“Alpine Eagle was an absolutely sensational racehorse with untapped ability” – Tony McEvoy
Our colt’s dam was the ill-fated broodmare Without Words who passed away after foaling this colt. A ½ sister to the outstanding 2yo and former sire CHURCHILL DOWNS. As a racehorse Churchill Downs won twice as a 2yo, including the Widden Stakes and finished 3rd behind MISS FINLAND in the Group 1 Golden Slipper before winning the Group 2 Stutt Stakes as a 3yo. He’d retire to stud after just 15 starts with 3 wins and two G1 placings as well as a 4th in the G1 Caulfield Guineas.
It’s also worth noting for the breeding buffs that this colt is bred on a highly-rated mating, scoring itself a rare 20/20 ‘Stallion Match’ rating and the fact that ALPINE EAGLE is bred on the same High Chaparral/Zabeel mare cross as already proven, high class sire DUNDEEL, make him an exciting new sire that should excel in Australia.
