Who will be the first to kick 100 out of Grenfell, Dare, or Redcliffe?
This weekend, three of the best players in country football will likely become the first to score 100 goals in their careers.
On Saturday, the race to be the first forward to score 100 goals this year might come down to Marong's Brandyn Grenfell (99), Alvie's Dom Dare (99), or Mitta United's Ethan Redcliffe (96).
Grenfell kicked five goals in his last game but fell short by one, setting the stage for Dare to capitalize with three majors last week, but he came up short.
Grenfell is now set to score a century for the second year in a row when his Loddon Valley League team takes on Bridgewater.
Grenfell announced, "We have a 50-year reunion/team of the 50 years and a big function afterward."
There will be many "old boys" present. I didn't set out to have it occur on a Saturday at the beginning of the year.
The forward is sure he can get it done quickly, so the spectators at Marong and the club's pursuit of a 29-game winning streak can receive their full attention.
"I hope I get it in the first couple of kicks," he said.
Except for two games, I've always scored the opening goal. If I get it in the second quarter, I'm not too worried because I think Bridgewater will play foolish buggers.
The boys might be looking for me, and I'd rather finish this quickly.
But I'd be quite surprised if I didn't.
Meanwhile, Redcliffe is looking to make his mark against the Rutherglen Cats in the Tallangatta and District League.
The forward is within striking distance at 96, having scored nine goals against the same team earlier this season.
With 43 goals in the last four weeks, including 20 against Wahgunyah, Redcliffe is quickly approaching the century mark.
Redcliffe expressed hope that he might complete the project during the first two quarters.
Getting the win is the top priority since we can still make the playoffs.
Cats will undoubtedly try their hardest to prevent me from obtaining this.
But I think I can finish it by the end of the first quarter.
In the offseason, Redcliffe transferred to Mitta from the Wodonga Raiders.
If he scores the final four goals, it will be the first time in his career that he has scored more than 80 points in a single season.
He believes his time in the Ovens and Murray League prepared him well for his current position in the Tallangatta League.
"It's more skilled and more one-on-one contests (in the Ovens and Murray)," he remarked.
"A little bit of help comes from my fitness and foot IQ."
Meanwhile, Dare, a star for Alvie, will be hoping to reach the milestone against Colac Imperials in a battle for first place in the standings.
This has been a busy week for the forward, who was also just announced as the club's new co-coach for the upcoming season.
The current captain has been on a tear in the last month, getting close to the century mark with 40 goals in the last four games.
