Nations League: Kane’s 50th goal rescues England in Munich; Belgium run riot against Poland
England rescued a point in Munich with a late strike from their captain Harry Kane. Jonas Hofmann scored early in the 2nd half to put the Germans in front before Harry Kane scored his 50th England goal through a penalty in the 88th minute to secure a draw for the Three Lions.
Germany made plenty of changes to their side that drew against Italy in the opening game, with Musiala, Ikay Gundogan, and Jonas Hofmann making the starting 11. Gareth Southgate, meanwhile, fielded his strongest line-up with Harry Maguire once again making the cut.
It was an entertaining game between two of football's old enemies as both teams created some good chances to score. Hofmann thought he gave Germany the lead in the 23rd minute when he slotted the ball past Jordan Pickford, but the goal was ruled out for off-side.
But Hofmann made no mistake the second time as he was put through on goal by Joshua Kimmich. His powerful shot was straight at Pickford but the England keeper couldn't keep out of the net.
Kane had a glorious opportunity to level it up for England but he couldn't slot in a beautiful cross from Jack Grealish. The England captain was fouled in the box by Nico Schlotterbeck and England were awarded a late penalty. Kane coolly converted the penalty to score his 50th goal for England, who is now only behind Wayne Rooney in the all-time top-scorers list for England.
"It's a really nice feeling," Kane told Channel Four. I had a couple of early chances and thought it could be one of those days. It's good to get the goal and it's just a shame we didn't nick it in the end," added Kane, who had earlier been denied by a superb Manuel Neuer save.
In the other game, a Belgium put six past Poland to secure a dominant victory. Robert Lewandowski scored the opening goal to give Poland the lead but five goals in the 2nd half from Belgium completed the 6-1 humiliation.
The Red Devils, without star striker Romelu Lukaku, missed a host of chances in the first half before Lewandowski made them pay in the 28th minute. Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel levelled it up for Belgium on the stroke of half-time.
The Belgians came out all guns blazing in the second half as they scored five past the Poles. Kevin de Bruyne put Belgium in front before Brighton forward Leandro Trossard scored a brace to extend their lead. Wolves' Leander Dendoncker added a 5th with a long-range effort and Lois Openda scored his first goal for Belgium.
In other games, Weghorst denied Wales a point with a late winner for the Netherlands. Norrington-Davies' 92nd minute strike looked to have secured a draw for Wales but Weghorst scored in the 94th minute to win the game for the Netherlands.
Ukraine, who are still reeling from their World Cup heartbreak last week, beat Ireland 1-0, while Scotland defeated minnows Armenia 2-0.
